Low morale can complete destroy the synergy in your office. However, that doesn’t mean people feeling down are unjustified. They may have had to watch several of their coworkers lose their jobs because of lack of profit, or maybe they were on the chopping block themselves before revenue started to rise once again. It’s a tough world right now, and just watching it can make employees fearful and make them suffer from low morale. So how do you figure out if your employees are faring okay?

Start By Asking

Look around at your office. Have you encouraged an open and honest environment? If so, people should be coming to you if they don’t feel like they’re up to the task of being productive. If you haven’t fostered that kind of environment, bring one employee at a time into your office and start asking them questions. How do they feel about their pay, and do they feel like it’s fair? Do they like where they are working, and do they like their supervisors? Finding out the answers to questions like these can help you determine if your office needs a boost.

Be Them for a Day

Push aside your responsibilities as a leader for the day and instead be one of your employees. Start by talking to the people in the offices next to yours like you’re just another person in the office. Take your lunch break with them and talk to the people they talk to every day. Understanding the day-to-day struggles of your employees can tell you exactly how they feel about their jobs, without them even having to say a word to you.

Analyze Your Behavior

Look at yourself and how you manage your employees. Your tactics for managing a team may have worked before the economy began to sank, but maybe it’s time to figure out if those same tactics are now crushing your team’s spirit. Do you just let your workers do what they need to do without micromanaging them? Do people stop talking when you come into the office? Are you working hard to ensure your business is thriving so you don’t have to let anyone else go? See what you can improve in your own behavior to make your office less stressed and more relaxed.
